This poem from the Bard of Scotland juxtaposes the pastoral springtime around the singer with their own emotional turmoil at unrequited love. Set by Burns to the tune "Jockey's Grey Breeks," the tune follows both the brightness of the surrounding nature and yet manages to end on a melancholy minor matching the speaker's perspective. The melody, which covers a wide vocal range, is passed around the choir, as each verse grows increasingly complex, adding harmony, and eventually dissonance, before a powerful ending.
