Ewazen has created a quality work for solo trumpet. The exciting use of space and line is outstanding. My students love this work because they can all make it work based on their perception / experience of September 11. For me it is not a dark work but full of emptiness and pathos. In Australia we are also separatist in view as we suffered few personal losses. We take the work on board as how life has changed and subsequently how we as individuals have changed. We have a work here as an aftermath of Japan tsunami called Kigan by Chris Perrin, and it is also great to play.
