Afternoon in Albuquerque is a musical depiction of interludes in the life of a cowboy. We see him first in a relaxing canter, interrupted by a short storm, then a resumption of the ambling jog. Later a period of quiet contemplation while eating a well-earned meal. Then a dramatic stampede, and finally a return to the easy riding of the beginning. The piece is moderately difficult, with soli passages for many instrument sections. Why Albuquerque? I wanted some town associated with cowboys and the Old West. and came up with a list of all the usual places, Deadwood, Tombstone, Dodge City, etc. But one day I was coming out of the St. Peter's Theatre in São Paulo, Brazil and the street sign caught my eye. Albuquerque Lins Street, named for a political figure of the past. Albuquerque. That would be the choice! Coupled with Afternoon, I had an alliterative title that rolled off my tongue and was evocative of the American past.
