By Paul Taylor. Composed by Harris (words and music). Arranged by Paul Taylor. This edition: pdf. 19th Century, Barbershop, Folk, Singer/Songwriter, Traditional. Score. 3 pages. Paul Taylor #1296855. Published by Paul Taylor (A0.1735397).

According to many, this was the first tune to make over one million dollars and was written around 1891. The composer, wrote the words, music and even performed it, always apologizing for his "poor voice," but noting also that the sentiment of the words are strong and sincere. It appears here as a piano solo with the chorus and one verse of text. The story is typical of "Tin Pan Alley," torch songs (or "parlor" songs) in which a man's niece would like to know why her uncle lives alone. The verses then uncovers the story of his experience with unreturned love.
