Colin Mawby’s Adoro Te Devote for eight voices is a deeply contemplative and finely crafted setting of the Eucharistic hymn traditionally attributed to St Thomas Aquinas. Written for eight voices, the work exploits the richness of an eight-part texture to create a sound world of profound intimacy and reverence.
Mawby alternates moments of luminous homophony with passages of gentle polyphonic dialogue between the voices, allowing the text to unfold with clarity while surrounding it in warm, resonant harmony. The musical language is restrained and eloquent: subtle harmonic inflections and carefully controlled dissonances serve the meaning of the words, guiding the listener toward an interior, prayerful focus.
