"Actus Contritionis" is one movement from a larger work entitled Reconciliation, a set of 12 Latin prayers. Each movement takes it's inspiration from individual postcards containing pictures of St. Michael's Cathedral in Coventry, England. When performed in sequence, Reconciliation can serve as a worship service however, the individual movements also can stand alone.

This very personal prayer is the second movement which contains the following text:
Deus meus, ex toto corde poenitet me omnium meorum peccatorum, eaque detestor, quia peccando, non solum poenas a Te iuste statutas promeritus sum, sed praesertim quia offendi Te, summum bonum, ac dignum qui super omnia diligaris.
Ideo firmiter propono, adiuvante gratia Tua, de cetero me non peccaturum peccandique occasiones proximas fugiturum. Amen.

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee and I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishments,
but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love.
I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy Grace, to sin no more and avoid the near occasions of sin. Amen.

This piece is a prayer of intimate introspection. The use of the lower range of the piano should be approached with the warmest tone possible. The choir should adjust their breathing and tempo so that they have complete mastery over the text. There is a caesura and grand pause after measure 28 to give reflection to both the audience or congregation and allow the choir to formulate their resolve.

If you would like to learn more about the other movements as they are published, or feel comfortable sharing how you used this work, please feel free to contact me at my website.
