Action-Passion-Illusion by the Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tuur has three movements: "Action" is a motoric tour-de-force of dense chords and rhythmic syncopation which blossoms in rondo fashion into layered legato passages. "Passion" grows out of slow melismas in the lower strings and develops into florid turns and tremolos as it reaches an eventual height of intensity. "Illusion" plays with interrupted ostinati (a clear cousin to Action) but is packed with cunning and sleight-of-hand.
