Achaian II is an elaboration of the musical material of the original Achaian solo cello piece by the composer (available via Sheet Music Plus). Both works depict the coloured bands of a painting by Bridget Riley (1981), which give the pieces their titles. In this piece, harmony is created between the two bassoons by sustaining and overlapping pitches of a line. The work is in ternary form, with a middle section consisting of a melodic line shared between the two bassoons. The work is highly accessible for the listener and is appropriate for most standards of players, including students and more advanced performers.
