This original composition for concert band is an exploration of time in the musical sense. The use of polyrhythms, frequently changing time signatures and themes reimagined in different metres and with altered emphases lead to unexpected shifts in pulse for the audience throughout. Undoubtedly, the very things that make the music interesting for the audience also make things interesting, and occasionally perhaps a little challenging, for the musicians themselves. The piece starts calmly with simple time signatures, moving into a more lively section in compound meters. There is a brief respite with a small, gentle trio before we launch into the last stretch with familiar themes from before, but now in odd time, culminating in a dramatic tension-building finish.
