Written as he lay dying of tuberculosis, Henry Francis Lyte's poem of courage and hope in times of great suffering and sorrow remain timely and appropriate for many occasions. This arrangement selects four of the verses of Lyte's poem, and offers a fresh harmonization of William Monk's Eventide for each verse, drawing attention through harmonic and melodic elements to key words in the text. The harmonic texture thickens significantly in the final verse, splitting the choir into 5 parts, before resolving with the text "I triumph still, if thou abide with me".
