Its Night Piece for Saxophone & Orchestra blends smoky jazz lyricism with an undercurrent of psychological tension; the blues section of that work forms the basis of this arrangement.
Reimagined as a dark, intimate feature for a Bb soloist (cornet or flugelhorn), the piece stays close to Herrmann’s original melodic and harmonic language while transforming the orchestration for brass band. Two vibraphones open the work, creating a shimmering nocturnal atmosphere before the soloist enters in an expressive, improvisatory style, complete with cadenzas.
Sparse textures, brooding bass lines and ominous bass trombone colours provide a shadowy backdrop, evoking the uneasy urban world of the film. The result is a moody, cinematic showcase that places both soloist and vibraphones firmly in the spotlight.
