What if Benny Goodman had wanted to include a single arrangement of a song from a Walt Disney film in his repertoire? Which song would he have chosen? Jazz and the music from Walt Disney films have gone hand in hand for nearly a century. The Disney studios used jazz in their film soundtracks, and many jazz musicians (Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, and Miles Davis, to name just a few) recorded Disney-related repertoire. And in the 2010s, two CDs were released under the title “Jazz Loves Disney,” featuring jazz artists singing and playing a selection of Disney repertoire.
But which song from the Disney canon would Benny Goodman have chosen to have arranged for his orchestra? It would have to be a nice up-tempo swing number, with a beautiful melody. Of course, it would need a vocal part that could be sung by the singer of the day. Additionally, it would need to lend itself well to the “Fletcher Henderson” treatment. And in that case, “A Guy Like You,” from “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” could be a good choice!
“A Guy Like You” is presented here as a piece that could have been a cornerstone of the Goodman vocal band repertoire. Scored for the line-up of the Benny Goodman Orchestra of 1935: solo clarinet/2 alto saxophones/2 tenor saxophones/3 trumpets/2 trombones/rhythm section/vocal. Trumpet 1 to Eb3. The vocalist has plenty of room to shine. There are also solo sections for clarinet, trumpet 2, and tenor 1. Enjoy!
