Jacques François Antoine Marie Ibert (1890–1962) was a French composer known for the color, clarity, and stylistic variety of his music. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire and, despite an interruption to his studies due to military service during World War I, won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1919 on his first attempt.
Ibert’s works span a wide range of genres, including operas, ballets, film and theatre music, piano pieces, choral works, and chamber music. Among his most celebrated compositions are the orchestral suite *Escales* (1922), inspired by Mediterranean ports of call, and *Divertissement* (1930), a lively and humorous work adapted from incidental music to the play *Un chapeau de paille d’Italie*. Rather than adhering to a single musical school, Ibert cultivated an eclectic style that could shift effortlessly from playful wit to rich lyricism.
In addition to composing, Ibert held several important cultural posts. He served as director of the Académie de France at the Villa Medici in Rome and later played a leading role in French musical life after World War II. His final official position was as administrator of the Paris Opera and the Opéra-Comique, helping guide two of France’s most important musical institutions.
