A Circus Suite by Stuart Johnson Concert Band - Sheet Music

By Stuart Johnson

All the excitement of the Big Top is contained within four short movements, but the safety net is well in place in the shape of ample cross-cuing. This is longer than the average "easy" piece and slightly more difficult, presenting a real musical challenge, but the minimal necessary instrumentation still applies, and of course Stuart Johnson's superb scoring ensures its effectiveness. The second movement features the tuba, and the third movement features alto saxophone (cued into horn).

Fantastic fun!

This piece packs a big punch and doesn't play safe - ignore the 'Easy' marking on the front, it's not very easy at all in places and really asks a lot of the musicians, especially when played at the fast tempos suggested. That said, young bands would enjoy the challenge and given lots of time to sort out tricky rhythms, it should be fun for all - the audience have loved it, particularly here in the UK.Johnson's writing is great across the band (particularly for the tuba and saxophone solo numbers) and eveyone has plenty to do, so this makes a great addition to the repertoire, particularly in the summer outdoor season.
