Anton Arensky, conventionally placed in the second rank of the most famous composers of his time, completely undeserved of such treatment. His brilliant compositional talent, high level of education, and vast experience writing diverse musical works in all major genres speak for themselves. This is easily determined and proven by simply listening to, or better yet, playing one of his compositions yourself. The vivid, memorable thematic material presented in his music is already a sufficient measure of his immense talent. Suite #1, originally written for two pianos, consists of three movements: Romance, Waltz, and Polonaise. In my orchestration, you will find a relatively small orchestra in the first movement, a decisive increase in its size in the second movement, and a full orchestra in the finale (#3). This orchestral crescendo is primarily due to the contrasting nature of these movements, but in no way stems from a desire to dress his work in a spectacular, elegant garment. Another feature that struck me upon first encountering the original was the clearly hidden orchestral style of the overall development. In response to this, my unconditional desire to arrange this suite for orchestra was born.
