Urtext by a great Scarlatti scholar and performer
This edition from 1953 is the first to present a selection of Scarlatti in chronological order (or the best that can be surmised, since the sources are not dated by date of composition). The preface is quite detailed and well worth reading. The critical notes are at the end of Volume II. The arrangement of the notes on the staves is by Kirkpatrick, rather than the original layout of the source materials as in the Fadini edition. This helps the performer to decide how to distribute the notes to each hand when they are close together. There are no other added performance hints such as fingering. Page turns are great. This selection contains few of the most popular pieces but exhibits a range of Scarlatti at his best. For large collections with fingering, check out the Editio Musica Budapest or Henle editions. For complete editions, we have Kenneth Gibert's Le Pupitre (Heugel) and Fadini (Ricord) - these have no fingerings and few editorial marks.
