Born in Braunschweig in ca. 1681, Schickardt receives his musical education at the ducal court of his city and begins his career in the Netherlands, at the service of Friedrich of Hessen-Kassel, Henriette Amalia of Anhalt-Dessau and Johan Willem Friso, prince of Orange. Before moving to Hamburg, in ca. 1712, he already has to his credit at least ten publications for recorder and oboe, both solo and in trio, a mirror of his profession of woodwind player. Among this early production, opus 5 is characterized by some quite interesting structural and formal elements.
