55 Songs - High Voice High Voice The Vocal Library by Roger Quilter High Voice - Sheet Music

By Roger Quilter

With a graceful gift for lyrical vocal writing, English composer Roger Quilter (1877-1953) created a rich body of art songs. Very few composers working in English have matched his achievement of a living body of beloved, relevant, literate repertoire. The strong melodies and natural phrasing make his compositions perfect literature for the progressing singer. There has never before this publication been a significant collection of Quilter. This new edition conveniently and economically collects 55 songs, all in clear, new music engravings and in two keys (with original keys noted). Many of the songs have never been published in transposition before this edition. This collection features a biography of the composer and notes on the songs.

Ideal for Vocal Coaching & Accompaniment

As a vocal coach and collaborative pianist, this Quilter collection is invaluable. The 'high voice' designation is accurate, and having 55 songs presented in clear new engravings, often in two keys, allows for optimal vocal support and range selection for my students. The piano accompaniments are beautifully crafted, providing elegant support without overshadowing the lyrical vocal lines.

Rewarding Challenge for the Advancing Hobbyist

I've really enjoyed diving into this Quilter collection. The 'intermediate' level is a good, rewarding challenge for me, and the strong melodies make it a pleasure to practice. It's fantastic to have such a comprehensive collection of his beautiful 20th-century songs. The clean engraving helps keep me motivated, and it genuinely feels like I'm learning to play the true composer's vision.

    Solid Art Song Repertoire

A comprehensive collection of Quilter's high voice art songs. The sewn binding is a huge plus for performance, ensuring the book stays open on the piano. While it’s standard classical notation (no chord symbols), the arrangements are accurate and well-suited for recitals or classical gigs. Great to have so many beloved pieces in one volume for quick access.

    A Wonderful Collection for Singers

These Quilter songs are a treasure chest of music, both for those who knpow his songs, as I thought I did, and for those new to Quilter, an often underrated English composer of the 20th Century. The collection contains old favourites, which I have known for many years in concerts and festivals, such as June, Love's Philosophy and Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal. I have also found beautiful and charming songs previously unknown, particularly those from his Seven Elizabethan Songs Op.12. My only complaint is that the key of June is too high, even for a high soprano like myself, and found elsewhere in F major rather than G - much more comfortable.

    Quilter Goldmine

For Roger Quilter fans, this book is a must-have. All of the popular Quilter pieces you've heard in recitals and competitions are there (Love's Philosophy, Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal, etc.), plus many I had never heard before. Wonderful book to add to your 20th century repertoire.
