It features numerous sections that contain contrapuntal exchanges and complex rhythmic patterns between groups of 2 or 3 players. There is an open solo section followed by a contrasting soft section played with soft timpani mallets. It ends with a unison section that is restated in increasingly quick tempos that build tension until the final decrescendo into nothing.
