For piano. Composed by Mikolaj Piotr Górecki. Contemporary Music. Book and Part(s). Composed 2023. 12 pages. Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne #PWM13111. Published by Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne (BT.PWM13111).
Mikołaj Górecki’s Three Mazurkas preserve all the generic features of the dance: the dotted rhythm, the regularly periodic form of the song with a contrasting middle section, the differentiated character (from rumbustious mazur to melancholy kujawiak), the modalisms and the subtle codas à la Chopin (echoes of whose Mazurka in A minor, op. 7 no. 2 can be heard in the first of Górecki’s miniatures). This music – simple and beguiling – sounds equally good in the concert hall and in the quiet of a home.
