Dinosaur Suite
for Beginner String Orchestra (with Optional Piano)
This Dinosaur Suite has been specially written for beginner string orchestras and mixed-ability school ensembles, making it ideal for early learners at approximately Grade 1 level. All string parts remain entirely in first position, allowing young players to take part confidently while developing ensemble skills, rhythm, and musical character.
The suite consists of three short, contrasting movements, each inspired by a different dinosaur:
1. The Speedy Velociraptor
A lively and energetic movement featuring quick rhythms and short motifs, encouraging secure bowing and rhythmic precision.
2. The Slow Stegosaurus
A calm, slower movement focusing on slower crochet notes and controlled tone production, ideal for developing listening skills and ensemble balance.
3. Brontosaurus Boogie!
A fun, rhythmic finale with a strong pulse and playful character, designed to engage young players and audiences alike.
To increase flexibility, a Violin 3 part doubling the Viola line is included, making the suite suitable for ensembles with limited or no viola players. An optional piano part is also provided to offer harmonic support during rehearsals or performances, helping to reinforce pitch and rhythm for developing players.
This suite works particularly well for school concerts, classroom projects, themed performances, and teaching repertoire, offering an imaginative and accessible introduction to ensemble playing while encouraging musical storytelling.
