The two Cassations in C major (Hob.III.6) and in B flat major (Hob.III.1) by Joseph Haydn are added to the "Quartet Op. 2 (Hob.III:8) in D major con laute" and to the "Sonata in F major (Hob.IV.F2)". This precious corpus of works for the king of the Baroque plucked strings, some of which are the primitive version of later works by the composer (such as for example his string quartet Op. 1, No. 6), probably dates from his meeting with the lutenist Joachim Bernhard Hagen in 1755 and was published by Breitkopf in 1770. It is more than likely that these gallant works, perfectly adapted to the technical and musical possibilities of the mandolin, could have been performed by mandolinists of the late 18th century, which constituted the golden age of the small "Italian" lute, especially in Vienna where we find the original works for mandolin by Mozart, Kozeluch, Hummel, Hoffmann, Giuliani… We are therefore dealing more with an extension of the original repertoire than with a true transcription; the border between the soprano lute and the mandolin being very blurred, even non-existent in the case of Antonio Vivaldi a few years earlier.

Les deux Cassations en Ut majeur (Hob.III.6) et en Si bémol majeur (Hob.III.1) de Joseph Haydn viennent s’ajouter au « Quartet Op. 2 (Hob.III:8) en Ré majeur con laute » et à la « Sonate en Fa majeur (Hob.IV.F2) ». Ce précieux corpus d’oeuvres pour le roi des cordes pincées baroque, dont certaines sont la version primitive d’oeuvres postérieures du compositeur (comme par exemple son quatuor à cordes Op. 1, No. 6), date vraisemblablement de sa rencontre avec le luthiste Joachim Bernhard Hagen en 1755 et sera édité chez Breitkopf en 1770. Il est plus que probable que ces oeuvres galantes, parfaitement adaptées aux possibilités techniques et musicales de la mandoline aient pu être interprétées par des mandolinistes de ce XVIIIe siècle finissant qui constituent l’âge d’or du petit luth « italien », de surcroit à Vienne où l’on retrouve les œuvres originales pour mandoline de Mozart, Kozeluch, Hummel, Hoffmann, Giuliani… On a donc plus à faire à une extension de répertoire original qu’à véritablement une transcription; la frontière entre le luth soprano et la mandoline étant très floue, voir inexistante dans le cas d’Antonio Vivaldi quelques années plus tôt.
