The first civilian colonists of San Antonio, Texas, were a group of pioneers who hailed from the Canary Islands. In 1731, they founded the village of San Fernando de Bexar (now known as San Antonio) and established the first organized civil government in Texas. After an arduous journey by sea and land that spanned over a year, these weary travelers arrived on March 9, 1731. This group consisted of 56 individuals who emigrated by the decree of King Philip V. "1731" is a lively Spanish Fanfare that is sure to captivate any audience! It features a trumpet solo at the beginning and end, symbolizing the departure from home and the arrival in a new land. The main theme is vibrant, reflecting the journey of the Canary Islanders across both sea and land. "1731" is dedicated to the San Antonio Symphonic Band, led by Dr. Esteban Montalvo, and will have its premiere in the spring of 2025.
