Urmas Sisask Sheet Music

About Urmas Sisask

Urmas Sisask (1960-2022) was a highly original Estonian composer, celebrated for his distinctive musical language that frequently draws inspiration from astronomy, sacred music, and Estonian runo-songs. He is primarily recognized for his extensive choral works, though his compositions span instrumental and orchestral genres as well, creating a unique sound world that bridges ancient traditions with a contemporary sensibility. Sisask’s significance lies in his ability to weave cosmic themes into deeply expressive and often meditative musical tapestries, earning him a reputation as a visionary musical shaman.

  • Sisask developed a unique "planetal scale" or "starry sky scale" by calculating the theoretical sound values from the rotation periods of different planets in our solar system. This five-pitch series (C#, D, F#, G#, A) remarkably corresponds to the Japanese Kumayoshi pentatonic scale.
  • His monumental work, "Gloria Patri," is a cycle of 24 a cappella hymns for mixed chorus based on Latin texts, lasting almost an hour and a half in performance. This acclaimed work has been widely performed internationally and is considered one of his most beloved choral compositions.
  • Sisask established a Musical Observatory Tower at Jäneda manor, where he also opened a self-made planetarium. It was in this tower that he continually made astronomical observations and composed many of his works dedicated to celestial bodies and constellations.
  • Urmas Sisask often stated, "I don't regard myself as a composer, rather transcriber of music," believing that the universe was created with love and that music already exists, waiting to be channeled by a human being.

Performing Urmas Sisask's sheet music offers a profoundly rewarding experience for musicians of various levels and ensembles. His choral works, known for their clear textures, simple harmonies, and fluid voice leading, are particularly well-suited for mixed choirs seeking expressive and melodious repertoire with spiritual depth. Pianists can explore his "Starry Sky Cycle," which was among his first pieces to gain attention. Instrumentalists and chamber groups will find his unique idiom, which often favors authentic church modes over major-minor tensions, both challenging and deeply evocative. Musicians will be drawn to the sincere emotionality, beautiful melodies, and the compelling connection to cosmic and mythological ideas embedded within his compositions.
