About Leos Janacek

Leoš Janáček was a highly original Czech composer of the late Romantic and early 20th-century periods, renowned for his innovative musical style deeply rooted in Moravian folk music and the rhythms and inflections of Czech speech. He is considered one of the most important Czech composers, alongside Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana, significantly contributing to the development of nationalistic and modernist music through his operas, orchestral works, and chamber music.

  • Janáček meticulously collected and notated thousands of "speech melodies" (nápěvky mluvy)—patterns of human speech intonation in various situations—which profoundly influenced the distinctive vocal lines and dramatic realism in his operas and other compositions.
  • Despite composing earlier works, Janáček achieved significant international recognition relatively late in his career, primarily after the successful Prague performance of his opera "Jenůfa" in 1916, when he was 62 years old. This late success led to an incredibly prolific period, during which he composed many of his most celebrated works, including "Sinfonietta" and "Glagolitic Mass," in the last decade of his life.
  • He founded and directed the Organ School in Brno in 1881, which he led until 1919 when it was transformed into the Brno Conservatory. Janáček also lived in a small house built for the director in the school garden from 1910 until his death.
  • Many of his late works, including operas like "Káťa Kabanová" and his two string quartets, were profoundly inspired by his passionate, long-running correspondence and infatuation with Kamila Stösslová, a married family friend much younger than him.
