Charles Wesley Sheet Music

About Charles Wesley

Charles Wesley (1707–1788) was an English clergyman, poet, and a principal leader of the Methodist movement, alongside his elder brother John Wesley. He is celebrated as one of the most prolific and influential hymn writers in Christian history, composing over 6,500 hymns that profoundly shaped congregational singing and theology worldwide.

  • Charles Wesley was the eighteenth of nineteen children born to Samuel and Susanna Wesley, and the younger brother of John Wesley, the co-founder of Methodism.
  • He was instrumental in forming the "Holy Club" at Oxford University in 1729, a group dedicated to rigorous spiritual discipline, Bible study, and acts of mercy, which later gained him and his associates the nickname "Methodists."
  • Some of his most enduring and beloved hymns include "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," "O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing," and "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling," many of which are still widely sung today across various denominations.
  • Despite his deep involvement in the Methodist movement, Charles Wesley remained an Anglican clergyman throughout his life and was initially opposed to a complete separation from the Church of England.
