Foo Fighter’s frontman Dave Grohl has stressed the need for more musical talent like Adele.
In an interview with Billboard, he said that he is not shocked at how Adele has become a phenomenon, selling millions of records around the world.
“You know why that record’s huge? Because it’s fucking good and it’s real,” he said. “When you have an artist singing about something real and she’s incredibly talented, it deserves all the rewards it gets, it’s a great record.”
He added that if all records were as good as Adele’s album 21 they would all sell as well.
“If all records were that good the music business would be on fire, but they’re not,” he remarked.
“A lot of people are promoting records that are just throw-it-against-the-wall-see-if-it-sticks meaningless bullshit. Everybody has the responsibility to do the right thing and promote artists that mean something.”
Grohl also suggested that rock music is overlooked in America, although the band has been nominated for six Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for Wasting Light.
In Australia and the UK, however, he believed that rock bands are very much at the forefront of music.
“You hear them on the radio, they have hits and play stadiums, and it’s almost like it’s bigger than it’s ever been,” he told Billboard about rock music in the UK.
Looking back on 2011, Grohl said the year has been the best of his life. Wasting Light was a return for the band to basic recording in his garage.
He recently wrote in the band’s blog that they wanted to “retain that human element, keep all of those beautiful imperfections” by recording songs in analog to create the “album of a lifetime”.
The former Nirvana drummer also revealed in the blog that the band could release a new album as early as this year.
