Hundreds of music lovers in Cumbria have enjoyed the region’s first urban 
classical music festival.
The event, which took place in Workington, featured music from the movies and the last night of the Proms.
Indeed, a heavy dose of various James Bond themes were interspersed with tunes from Schindler’s List, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Star Wars and Superman.
The concert was organised by Workington Rotary Club, Allerdale Council and Whitehaven’s Rosehill Theatre with the two-day festival aiming to bring together people from the Workington area for an evening of classical music.
And, to ensure that it was accessible for everyone, ticket prices were subsidised by sponsorship from local companies and organisations.
One reveller, Elizabeth Workman, explained to the Cubrian News and Star
that it was great to have classical music on her doorstep.
“I enjoy live music. With the Last Night of the Proms it’s just that lovely feeling. Each year we watch it on TV and we thought this is the closest we’ll get to going,” she said.
“We’ve got our flags and an umbrella that’s red, white and blue. You sense the atmosphere when it’s live; that’s the difference.”
To round off the Urban Classical weekend the Our Lady and St Michael’s Church, in Workington, welcomed the arrival of the Simon Bolivar String Quartet all the way from Venezuela.
The group performed classical music from a range of popular composers as part of a prestigious UK tour which includes London’s South Bank Centre and the Edinburgh International Festival.
