Coldplay has entered the UK album chart at number one, selling 208,000 copies in the first week.
The figures now make the album Mylo Xyloto the second-biggest first-week sales album of the year so far.
Only Lady Gaga’s Born This Way has beaten the entry, which achieved sales of 215,000 in its first week of release in May.
Moreover, sales of Mylo Xyloto have outstripped the entire top five combined, putting to rest lead singer Chris Martin’s fears about the new release.
Earlier this month, he said that the first day the band’s albums are released he wants to die.
“I feel suicidal,” he told the Daily Star. “Before our albums come out I feel that we still own it, that we have control over our music.
“But once it’s out there in the world it’s no longer ours. I start to panic and think, ‘What if people don’t like this album? What if it’s the one our biggest fans don’t like?'”
Needless to say, Mylo Xyloto, the fifth studio album released by Coldplay, is set to be just as popular if not more than their past efforts.
One of the reasons for the high volume of sales could be down to the fact that the album was withheld from being streamed on Spotify, so fans would not be able to listen to it for free.
Martin described the new album as being “more rounded” and it even features the voice of Rihanna on the track Princess of China and fans are calling for the song to be released as a single.
Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds was number two in the album charts, followed by Michael Buble’s Christmas. Bruno Mars’ Doo Wops & Hooligans and Kelly Clarkson’s Stronger made up the top five.
Professor Green and Emili Sande’s Read All About It topped the UK singles chart.
