Coldplay managed to pick up the top honours at the
recent American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) awards show.
The British foursome, which comprises of Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland and Will Champion, were named as Songwriters of the Year by the society, which collects royalties on behalf of artists.
In addition, Coldplay’s hit single Viva La Vida also came in for praise from ASCAP and earned the group the Song of the Year honours for getting the most airplay in the US.
The band, who are currently working with producer Brian Eno on their fifth album, accepted their awards with a video message from their studio in London.
A total of 20 song awards were presented over the course of the evening.
And among the other winners were AC/DC’s Brian Johnson (Back in Black), Paul McCartney (Come Together), U2 (I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For) and Def Leppard and Mutt Lange (Pour Some Sugar on Me).
With regards to the forthcoming album, a recent blog post on the group’s website is sure to reassure fans that everything is progressing well.
“The songs haven’t assumed their final beautiful form yet, but they’re a very long way from their skin and bones phase,” the post said.
“What’s impossible not to conclude though, is that they have some absolutely killer tunes. I have no idea whether the fellas left for their break proud of what they’ve achieved so far and excited about what they have here, but I really hope so. They should be.”
