Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes has revealed that he believes that 
performing chamber music is essential to a musician’s future development.
Speaking in an interview with German broadcaster Deutsche Welle, the musician describes chamber music as “the most natural form of music-making”.
“Just give me a violinist and a cellist, and we can play a trio,” he added.
“Chamber music is also essential in a musician’s development because you have to listen to others and find your place within the landscape of a piece, whether you have the foreground or background. It’s also a great way to get to know people and a lot of fun.”
Andsnes adds that, for him, performing chamber music is like jamming with a rock group, “why should it be considered a niche or elitist? It is as normal as a rock band gathering in a garage”, he said.
Born in Norway in 1970, Andsnes has enjoyed a career which has
spanned over 20 years and during that time he has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues with leading orchestras.
The artist, who is currently the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra’s Pianist in Residence, also used the interview to discuss his plans for the future, including performing and recording piano works by Beethoven.
He has made a name for himself in the classical world playing, performing and recording just about everything including Brahms, Grieg, Janacek and Britten and has won a number of awards for his interpretation of all four composers.
