Burton students enter Guinness Book of World Records

A group of students in Burton has entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest number of people singing a song simultaneously.
In a concerted effort to break the previous record, the Sign Language Choir from de Ferrers Academy joined forces with a number of other choirs from elsewhere in the UK.
The original record, which featured 94,000 people, was overtaken at an event staged at Bladon House School in Newton Solney, with more than 130,000 contributing to the new landmark.
Millissa Hicklin, a member of the choir, explained her pride to the Burton Mail, saying: “There were more than 130,000 people signing to the song Sign to Sing, so not only did we break the world record, we smashed it.”
Echoing this view is Hamza Mahmood, a 16-year-old sign language choir member, who said that it was a “great experience and a day I’ll never forget”.
Every week, the de Ferrers Academy stages sign language clubs for staff and students. And in addition to this, there is an annual concert staged every year, known as Celebrate in Sign, which is an entire evening dedicated to signed performances.
One of the driving forces behind the project is Steve Tucker, who works as a sign language interpreter and communication support worker at the de Ferrers Academy.
“The academy does lots of positive activities and events to support deaf students and the sign language choir so we feel this is an issue very close to our hearts,” he told the news provider.
“We are over the moon that we’ve helped Sign2Sing set a new world record and hope this helps to raise awareness for two very worthy charities.”
Sign2Sing and Sign Health, a charity that supports deaf children and adults throughout the UK, were the two bodies responsible for organising the event.
