As the arrival of 2011 gets ever closer, classical music fans in the UK 
will no doubt be looking forward to switching on BBC Radio 3 to enjoy The Genius of Mozart.
The public service broadcaster has announced that it will be devoting the first 12 days of the New Year to playing every note that the prolific composer wrote.
From his piano concertos and string quartets to his operas and symphonies, listeners will be able to enjoy his works.
The Genius of Mozart season will feature documentaries and live performances to honour the composer described by Radio 3 controller Roger Wright as “a prolific genius”.
Highlights include live performances of two piano concertos from the BBC Philharmonic in Manchester, a concert of Mozart’s best-loved chamber music from members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and popular concertos in two live concerts from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
Mr Wright, commented on the event: “After the groundbreaking success of
The Beethoven Experience and A Bach Christmas we’re thrilled to announce our all-encompassing Mozart season, building on Radio 3’s unchallenged track record in using its whole schedule to celebrate the music of a composer.
“Mozart was a prolific genius, so we hope that new audiences will join Radio 3 and BBC Four on air and online for what promises to be a really entertaining and informative 12 days.”
As part of the build-up to the season, listeners to Breakfast on Radio 3 were invited to vote for their favourite piece of Mozart’s music, with Requiem Mass in D minor (K.626) being crowned the most popular piece.
