Just weeks after Amy Winehouse’s death, her album Back to Black has become the biggest-selling album of the 21st Century.
The Rehab singer died on July 23rd and her second album went straight back into the charts, increasing in sales by 37 times, while her top-selling singles saw a 23-fold increase in sales.
Last Sunday (August 14th) marked the third week at number one for the album, which marks its seventh time hitting the top spot since it was released in 2006 to much acclaim.
The album won Winehouse five Grammy Awards and a BRIT Award. Produced by Mark Ronson, the album blends R’n’B and soul and her lyrics highlighted the her experiences with drink, sex and drugs.
Music Week reported that 43,726 copies were sold last week – of its original and deluxe editions – bringing overall sales to 3,248,816.
This means that the late musician has overtaken James Blunt’s Back to Bedlam as the biggest-selling album of the century, which has sold 3,240,815 copies.
However, the news provider claimed that over time, both albums will be overtaken by Adele’s 21, which has already seen 2,874,922 copies sold since it was released in January this year.
Meanwhile, Winehouse’s debut album Frank has fallen slightly to number four, according to the Official Charts Company.
Adele’s two albums are also in the top five, with 21 at number two and 19 at number five.
The tributes continue to flood in for the London-born jazz singer. Green Day have written a new tribute song titled Amy, which they performed at a gig in California last week, while Pete Doherty is said to be dedicating his shows at Reading and Leeds Festivals to Winehouse.
Reports also suggest that the singer will be remembered at the MTV Video Music Awards later this month.
MA executive producer Amy Doyle told Billboard: “We had a great history with Amy. She was very near and dear to us.”
