ABRSM celebrates Music Medals landmark

In January 2011, ABRSM’s Music Medals assessments passed the ABRSM Music Medals: Flute Ensemble Pieces - Goldmilestone of 40,000 candidates since launch.
In 2010 – a second successive record-breaking year for candidate numbers – Music Medals were made available in schools as well as through Music Services.
Guy Perricone, ABRSM’s chief executive said: “We are delighted that, after another record-breaking year, ABRSM’s Music Medals assessments have now helped more than 40,000 students to recognise and celebrate their musical achievements. Music Medals will continue to play a vitally important role for ABRSM in the future.”
Launched in 2004, Music Medals are a framework of assessments and teaching resources that set goals and celebrate achievement with a medal that a young person can be proud of.
Music Medals meet the needs of instrumental teachers and their pupils by providing a suggested teaching format, fully supported by a unique range ABRSM Music Medals: Violin Options Practice Bookof affordable music for beginners.
There are five progressive levels. Music Medals start at Copper and Bronze, which provide stepping-stones to Grade 1. Then Silver, Gold and Platinum reward further musical progress.
Music Medals are available for most commonly taught instruments and each assessment covers three activities: playing together, playing solo and musicianship skills. Performances are videoed, marked by the teacher and moderated by ABRSM. Every successful candidate is awarded a certificate and their own Music Medal.
More information about Music Medals information is available from the ABRSM website. The Music Medals materials are available to purchase from Musicroom now.
