On Friday 24th February 2012 between 5pm – 7pm, staff from Musicroom Galleria, Hatfield are going to be taking part in a charity fire walk across a bed of hot coals!

Shoppers are invited to sponsor staff and donate money on the night. All proceeds will be donated to the British Heart Foundation.

Tim Stirling, centre director, encourages people to head down and check out the smouldering event this Friday:

“The fire walk will take place smack bang in the middle of The Galleria so it will offer a fantastic spectacle for shoppers. We want to raise as much money as possible for the British Heart Foundation so we hope lots of people come and watch.”

Musicroom Bristol were visited by an unexpected celebrity customer over the weekend.

The Big Yin himself, Billy Connolly, headed down to our college green store to take in our range of music tutorials and guides.

After buying some banjo and bluegrass DVDs, the legendary comedian even smiled for our camera before heading off into town.

John Adams Live In Musicroom

It was a rainy, dreary December day in Portsmouth, just two days before Christmas.  Hoards of shoppers, desperately dashed through the rain, in hopes of finding those last-minute Christmas presents. Suddenly, ball of sunshine in the form of X-Factor’s John Adams, and a rather soggy entourage of guitarist/bass player Tom Kent, photographer Giles Babbidge, friends, and hoard of teenagers followed him in off the streets, and burst into Musicroom Portsmouth! 

John, with the help of Tom, had embarked on a busking tour ( sponsored by our friends JHS ) of the UK to promote his single ‘Nowhere To Hide’, which is available through iTunes and we here at Musicroom Portsmouth, were fortunate enough to be part of his first tour.

Once John had warmed his vocal chords with a good ol’ cup of tea, (made by yours truly), out came this beautiful, haunting voice which could surely melt even the iciest of hearts.  He serenaded the crowd that had gathered with a medley of popular songs and requests from the audience. To their delight, he included  ‘Cannonball’ by folk singer, Damien Rice, the song which got him noticed by Gary Barlow on The X-Factor and through to Boot camp.  Like a true gentleman, he posed for photos with fans, answered their question and signed autographs, all while flashing that shy, genuine and rather white smile of his.

With his time in the shop sadly coming to an end, I’m left with a warm feeling that John Adams is a born performer, whose smile has the ability to blind and whose voice has the ability to pierce the heart.

Pianist, singer and songwriter Elio Pace dropped in to the Portsmouth store on Sunday to perform a few numbers, entertaining customers and passers by, and showing off the latest Yamaha digital pianos in our recently refitted ‘Yamaha at…” piano department.

The Hampshire-born musician is an accomplished pianist, and treated us to a mix of rock and roll, blues and boogie from his own back catalogue as well as some popular covers.

Elio has played and toured with a huge variety of artists as diverse as Art Garfunkel, Suzi Quatro and Albert Lee, as well as with his own band.

He is perhaps best known for his regular appearances on the BBC Radio 2 show ‘Weekend Wogan’, as musical director and leader of the house band. He performed with his band on a weekly basis, as well as accompanying visiting artists and writing the programme’s theme music.

Elio’s visit to the Portsmouth store was further enlivened by the attendance of various members of his own family who also live locally. They were only too willing to provide backing vocals and accompaniment on cue!

Musicroom can also take a little bit of the credit for reuniting Elio with the man who recorded his first demos 25 years ago. Greg is a regular visitor to the store, but we were as surprised as anyone when he and Elio recognised each other from their teenage days!

Elio recalled with remarkable clarity the mobile studio business that Greg ran – appropriately named ‘No Fixed Abode’ - and the songs that they had produced. He even remembered Greg charging £76 for a full 13 hours work. Not bad for the recording session that launched a career!

The staff at Portsmouth would like to extend a big thank you to Elio for sparing the time to give us all a highly enjoyable afternoon, and to Yamaha for making it happen. It certainly brightened up a rather grey day.

We can’t promise to play them quite like Elio, but there is always an extensive range of Yamaha pianos and keyboards in our new-look piano department, ready to be tried, tested and demonstrated. On the 10th September 2011, Salisbury-based Guitar tutor Adrian Smale will be present at musicroom Salisbury to offer short personal Guitar lessons in store.  Whether you have just bought a new instrument and are interested in one-to-one tuition, or simply need some help and advice from an experienced teacher, Adrian will be on hand to offer advice and help to players of all ages and abilities.

Adrian Smale started playing the Guitar at 16 having first played Violin and Piano.  On moving to Salisbury he was taught by Wendy Partridge and went through the AB grades going on to pass Grade 8.  He then continued his studies on various residential and master classes with Julian Byzantine, John Mills and Gerald Garcia, while also performing and teaching.

Teachers on Saturday enjoyed a presentation by Trinity Guilhall examiner Paul McClure on the many examinations provided by Trinity Guildhall.  Feedback after the event were “I enjoyed the informal atmosphere” “there was a relaxed approach” and “I liked the freebies!”

Teachers were guided through a slide presentation and encouraged to ask any questions on the format of the exams and marking criteria.  They were then asked to have a go at marking a piece played by Paul and then to mark an aural examination with store manager Sally as a candidate!

All in all a fun, informative event and we look forward to many more
